Program Format

The Project Management Certificate Program is offered in a classroom setting. It is approved for 40 PDUs by the Project Management Institute and fulfills the education requirements to take the PMP® Test.

In this course, you will gain an understanding of project management fundamentals, tools and concepts. All of these are essential to understanding/interpreting the text, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, (PMBOK® Guide). You will also gain working knowledge of the technical concepts of project management systems such as WBS and Networks models. By enrolling in this course, you have the opportunity to acquire skills that typically take a long time to master. You can also satisfy the 35 hours of educational requirements of PMI-administered PMP® and CAPM tests.

Additional Materials

You have the option of purchasing Microsoft Project software for the course. However, that is not a requirement. Demonstrations of important technical concepts using MS Project will be learned in class. The demonstration enables you to get started with basic features of MS Project if you choose to obtain the software. MS Project software can be obtained through the following sources:

  • A 120-day trial version of MS Project is included with the textbook if you buy a new textbook.
  • A 60-day free trial of Microsoft Project is available on the internet, or you may purchase a regular version of the software.
  • Older versions of MS Project software such as MS Project 2007 are acceptable.

Vish Hegde

Effective teaching is not just content collection and distribution but also creating an experience in the classroom. Enliven lectures and interactive discussions not only teach content but also help students realize their practical relevance and apply them in real world situation

Dr. Vish Hegde is a Professor of Management at the California State University, East Bay. He has over 25 years of experience that spans both academic and industrial organizations. He started his career as mechanical engineer and has worked for three years in aeronautical design and renewable energy systems areas. He obtained Ph.D. in Operations Management from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997. He then worked for five years in IT companies of which four years was at PeopleSoft as a senior consultant and product manager. He was involved in the implementation of PeopleSoft ERP software at several companies and in IT infrastructure planning for application hosting services business.

He joined California State University East Bay in 2002 and pursuing an academic career, where he wants to bring a blend of academic expertise and industry experience into teaching, research, and consulting. He has published a number of refereed research articles on topics including e-commerce, supply chain management and project management. He has taught for the executive MBA, graduate, and undergraduate programs of CSUEB. He has taught eleven subjects that includes project management, operations and supply chain management, e-commerce, business analytics, new product introduction, and management information systems. He has been teaching project management certification programs to professionals, and giving project management seminars and lectures to industries such as BART and CISCO.

You don’t have to be the project manager for a super skyscraper to benefit from structured project management – everyone can use practical project management tools to succeed.

CHERYL ALLEN, MS, PMP offers over 30 years’ experience as a project management consultant and trainer. She has developed and delivered project management training for organizations including educational institutions, government, and private companies. Ms. Allen assisted several organizations to implement a Project Management Office (PMO) and a framework for program managers to prioritize and track multiple projects resulting in more effective use of resources. Ms. Allen’s project management training topics include “Practical Project Management Essentials” and “PMP® Exam Preparation”. Ms. Allen is a Project Management Professional (PMP®) certified by the Project Management Institute (PMI). She holds an MS in Computer and Information Science from Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in Mathematics from Montana State University.

Who should take project management courses?

Are there requirements to take a project management course?
No, there are no requirements. As long as you can successfully complete the program coursework, you are invited to enroll. 

How many hours will I earn for completing a Project Management course?
You will earn 40 hours of project management education requirements in PMP® application. The course is also approved for 40 PDUs by the Project Management Institute.

Will I have to pass an exam to finish the course?
There is no exam required to complete the course for CEU credit.

Will I be PMP® certified after taking CSUEB’s project management courses?
No, Cal State East Bay does not award you with your PMP® credential. The Project Management Institute awards this credential. 


How much does tuition cost?
The total estimated cost of the Project Management Certificate Program is $2,295 for CEU credit or $2,595 for academic credit. Please note that program tuition fees are subject to change at any time.

PMI® members receive a 10% discount. Cal State East Bay alumni are eligible to receive a 15% discount.


What financing options are available to me?
Traditional financial aid (such as completing the FAFSA, Pell Grants, etc.) is not applicable for Continuing Education certificate programs. Learn more about other financial aid options.
