Master of Social Work

Admissions

We are no longer accepting applications for Fall 2013. We will begin accepting applications for Fall 2014 in October 2013. Please email MSW3yearprogram@csueastbay.edu and request to be notified about upcoming information sessions.

Admission Requirements

The MSW degree program is open to students planning a career in social work who have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and who have earned an overall grade point average of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) in their last 90-quarter units (60 semester units) of undergraduate work. Students with a GPA below 2.8 may be admitted based on an evaluation of their student profile, including work experience, resume, letters of recommendation, and personal statement (see below).

Please note that you MUST apply separately to the University and to the Department. To apply to the University, please complete the "University Graduate and Post-baccalaureate Application" online. To be considered for the three-year MSW program, choose "Hayward" when asked for campus and "Social Work - MSW - 3 Year Spec Sess" for program. Please note that the University charges a $55 application fee. The department does not charge an additional application fee.

In addition to the "University Graduate and Post-baccalaureate Application," all applicants should submit:

  1. A completed departmental application form
  2. A personal statement
  3. Three letters of recommendation, along with this coversheet (letters from prior instructors or supervisors preferred)
  4. A resume

Successful experience in social work or social work-related volunteer and paid positions will be considered in evaluating applications.

Admission to the university and admission to the MSW degree program are separate steps. It is suggested that application for admission to the university (Part A of the application) be filed together with the form for entry into the degree program (Part B of the application).

Applying to the Program

Early submission of applications is strongly recommended due to limited program capacity. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Those received after the program has reached capacity will not be reviewed for the 2014-2015 academic year, even if submitted by the indicated deadlines.

Please submit the following items to the Department of Social Work:

  1. An application process checklist (with applicant’s signature)
  2. Consent to criminal background check
  3. A personal statement (not to exceed 5 pages, double spaced)
  4. A current resume
  5. Complete set of official transcript(s) (in a sealed envelope)
  6. TOEFL (for International students)
  7. Three letters of recommendation (along with coversheet)
