A Frost-y Sampler

Event Type: Course
Instructor:

Jerry H. Bryant, professor emeritus of English, CSUEB

Date/Time:

Thursdays, October 7, 14, 21 & 28, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Fee:

$40 for OLLI members/ $55 for non-members

Description:

Professor Bryant will examine Robert Frost's gift for turning New England forests and countrysides into lessons about ourselves, using a wide sampling of the poet's work. The popular image of Frost as a wise sage with a sly sense of humor is commonplace, but writers often have darker sides. Frost’s regrets, depressions, and fears of the irrational--both in nature and in himself--help make him a fascinating writer. Join Professor Bryant for a deeper look at this beloved poet and get to know him anew.

The Sonnets: Shakespeare Offstage

Event Type: Course
Instructor:

Jerry H. Bryant, professor emeritus of English, CSUEB

Date/Time:

Thursdays, November 4* & 18*; December 2 & 9, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. (*note: no class scheduled Nov. 11th  or 25th)

Fee:

$40 for OLLI members/ $55 for non-members

Description:

Meet the lesser-known Shakespeare, the poet rather than the dramatist. The Bard was master of the sonnet, one of the most popular of 16th Century literary forms, used for love, complaint, and celebration. Dr. Bryant will guide you through a selection of Shakespeare's sonnets, analyzing the form itself and tracking it from its Italian origins forward through  Donne, Milton, and Wordsworth. Learn how this great literary device evolved in both form and usage. You may even discover "what is your substance, whereof are you made."
