Certificate Program

Internationally recognized by event professionals and students, the Wedding Planner (Online) Certificate Program at California State University, East Bay provides a comprehensive education relating to the production of weddings and special events. This intensive 10-week program is designed to give students the industry skills, required knowledge, and practical training needed to pursue a career in wedding and event management.

The program director and instructor, Joyce Scardina Becker, is a credentialed educator with over 25 years of hospitality industry experience.  She started her in-class Wedding Planner Certificate Program in 1997, and since then the program has been the global benchmark for all other wedding training programs in the wedding industry. As president of Events of Distinction, Ms. Scardina Becker has designed and planned hundreds of weddings and special events, receiving 16 international awards for her wedding and event management expertise. Ms. Scardina Becker draws from her wedding wisdom and teaching talents to provide students with vital knowledge and insights about wedding planning in a rigorous academic environment.

Students in the Wedding Planner (Online) Certificate Program receive detailed instruction about the following topics, essential for success in the wedding and special events industry:

  • Event management fundamentals, including:  budgeting, long-range planning, vendor negotiations and contracts, insurance coverage, timeline preparation, and on-site management.
  • Key vendor services, including:  food & beverages, music, flowers, cake, rental items, lighting, photography, transportation, stationery, and videography.

Details about wedding protocol, customs, and etiquette, with a special emphasis on ethnic and religious traditions, as well as same-sex weddings.

Program Objectives

  • To equip graduates with the knowledge needed to enter and excel in the challenging and rewarding field of wedding planning.
  • To give graduates a thorough understanding of the myriad aspects of researching, designing, planning, producing, and evaluating weddings.
  • To prepare graduates to work as either independent wedding planners, or to seek employment as a wedding and event specialist for a hotel, resort, caterer, event management company, or other wedding industry business.

  • Individuals who wish to enter the wedding and special events industry, either as a planner, a catering sales manager, or any other professional position in the industry.
  • Wedding and event planners and catering sales managers who seek to improve their skills and marketability and have not had the benefit of a university training program.
