Frequently Asked Questions

Included below are answers to questions we typically receive about the Wedding Planner Certificate Program. Please also see our general FAQ's for answers to questions about registration and other departmental policies.

Do I have to be admitted to the University to take courses in the Wedding Planner Certificate Program?
No. The Wedding Planner Certificate is offered through Cal State East Bay's Division of Continuing and International Education, which does not require University admissions for its programs. There may be, however, other admissions requirements associated with the Wedding Planner Certificate Program, which can be viewed on the Admissions Page.

How much work/study time does the class entail?
There are around 40 hours of class time. Three hours of study is recommended for every hour of class time, roughly estimating out to 120 hours of study time. After each completed session, there will be a quiz at the beginning of the following session, testing students on their knowledge of the previous lesson. The end of the course culminates with a certificate exam testing the students' knowledge of what they have learned over the previous five months.

There is a project assigned to the students termed a "Staging Guide" it is an example of a mock wedding to be developed by each student. We recommend that 60-80 hours be spent preparing the Staging Guide assignment.

Is there anything I can read/do to prepare for the class?
Emily Post's Etiquette book can be very helpful. Additionally, Joyce Scardina Becker has authored Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding, published by St. Martin's Press. This book is not only a great addition to your library as a planner, but it is the perfect supplement to the course, giving students a second, detailed look at topics covered.

Looking at Web sites and participating in or belonging to meeting planner associations (i.e. ISES, or MPI) can also be beneficial in preparing for this course.

What kind of information do we cover in the class?
This course covers everything and anything having to do with weddings. Students are introduced to the wedding market of today, learning statistics and trends of the industry. The course will cover typical issues that a planner handles: budgeting, long-range planning, vendor negotiation and contracts, insurance, timeline preparation, and on-site management. It will review and discuss in detail all of the services provided by the major wedding vendors, such as food and beverage, music, flowers, cakes, photographers, transportation, invites and more, as well as teach appropriate techniques for selecting them. The course explores wedding protocol, customs, and etiquette, with a special emphasis on ethnic and religious traditions.

Will this class help prepare me for a career in the wedding planning field?
Absolutely!!! Our successful alumni have used this course as a stepping stone into great places within the industry. Many alumni have signed on with wineries, hotels, and private estates throughout California to head their wedding and special event departments. Some of our students find their interest in the wedding industry has lead them to working for top caterers, florist, or other vendors as Directors of Sales.

Is it necessary to have a certificate in this field?
As the industry grows, having a certificate distinguishes you from the many wedding planners in the field who identify themselves as a planner even though they have very little experience or knowledge. Certification from an accredited university informs clients or potential employers that you have expert knowledge in all aspects of a wedding and can make informed recommendations to truly benefit your bride and groom.

What is the classroom environment like?
The wedding planner classroom is a very interactive setting, where students are encouraged to ask questions, and engage in conversation with the instructor and presenters.

What should I wear to class?
Due to lengthy class hours comfortable attire with layers is advised, while still keeping professionalism in mind.

What items should I bring to class?
Pens, highlighters, and any other classroom items you may need to feel successful. Notebooks will be provided. It also is advisable to bring water, lunch, and any other items you might need throughout the day.

How do I know if wedding planning is right for me?
Career choice is always a personal decision. Even after many years of loving one career, you may decide to go into a different direction. This class could definitely help you explore and learn in depth knowledge about the field, which might help you make a career decision. While people may dream of being J.Lo, it's not always as glamorous. Wedding Planners work long days and sporadic hours. They work most weekends. They spend a large portion of their time in the office, mainly with only phone or email interaction. On the flip side, where else can you find a career that so constantly surrounds you with happiness and celebration? Wedding planners are a huge part of the happiest day of many couple's lives. They are able to lend their talent and creativity to an industry that is constantly bringing in new ideas and trends, updating itself with each and every season.

Analysis, communication, coordination, design, flexibility, multi-tasking, and technology skills are just some of the many skills that are key in this field. Additional skills or experiences that might be useful are: experience in the hospitality (hotel, restaurant, travel), and customer service industry.
