Certificate Program

The California State University, East Bay Certificate in Medical Transcription gives aspiring medical transcriptionists the skill and confidence necessary to transcribe a variety of medical records under a variety of circumstances.

Students who take advantage of Cal State East Bay's program will be able to practice transcribing real-world hospital medical records that include history and physical examinations, radiology reports, operative procedures, pathology reports, consultations, discharge summaries, a death summary, an autopsy report and correspondence.

The recordings students will transcribe will have varying speeds of speech (which will increase as students progress through the program), voices with varying regional accents and other obstacles that professional medical transcriptionists must regularly overcome. The curriculum also provides students an introduction to medical terminology and basic human anatomy.

Offered in partnership with Gatlin Education Services, our program's online-only format makes it convenient for anyone in the world, not just those who live or work in the San Francisco East Bay Area.

Program Objectives

• To prepare graduates for entry-level medical transcription positions.
• To equip graduates with the skill and confidence necessary to transcribe a variety of medical records under a variety of circumstances.
• To give graduates the ability to, either by memory or by using a dictionary or reference book, spell and define the medical terms and abbreviations they will hear in recordings.
• To give graduates skill in transcribing medical reports using correct report format, capitalization, number, punctuation, abbreviation, symbols and metric measurement rules.
• To prepare graduates to become medical transcriptionists able to meet the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality and ethics.
