The certificate is a nine month academic program comprised of three courses (one per academic quarter) taken in the following sequence:

  • Fundamentals of Energy Efficiency Design
  • Integration of Energy Efficiency Solutions
  • Practical Application and Client Interface Fundamentals

Classes are held in the evenings at The Oakland Center campus (1000 Broadway, Suite 109, Oakland).

Program Objectives

At its core, the program prepares graduates to understand the engineering fundamentals of energy efficient building design, sustainable construction practices, and to successfully deliver real-world energy efficiency solutions integration to clients.

The program is designed to:

  • Provide a foundation for fundamentals in energy efficient design, including IDSM (Integrated Demand Side Management) programs and jobs, new construction and retrofitting, codes and standards, basic building science, materials and methods and new standards for energy management (i.e., ISO 50001).
  • Provide a framework for applying and integrating energy efficiency systems and solutions, e.g., benchmarking, energy auditing, energy modeling, building simulation modeling, building controls/IT systems, as well as exploring emerging technology solutions in solar and renewables.
  • Provide an overview of the utility industry, its systems and the regulatory and legislative environment in which it operates, least-cost design, demand response, gas/electric rate structures, submetering, AB 32, decoupling, how utilities make money, and utility pricing modeling and risk analysis.

The program is ideal for technical professionals with a Bachelors degree who want to advance their skills in integrated energy solution systems for buildings. This program prepares students to become an engineering solutions manager, technical solutions manager, or project engineer within the energy and utility industry.
